What is Project Euphonia?

LSVT Global has partnered with Google on an exciting research project called Project Euphonia to help improve automatic speech recognition software for people with speech disorders. These disorders may make using devices like Google Home, The Nest and other Smart devices, Siri, Alexa, or speech-to-text frustrating.

To do this, we need samples of disordered speech to train the system. LSVT Global is recruiting people with speech disorders to help!

How does it work?

Participants will record themselves saying a set of provided phrases on their computer or mobile device from the comfort of their own home. An expert speech clinician will educate them on the process and assist with the recordings. This can be completed in as little as a couple of hours.

Who can participate?

If you are 18 or over and your speech and voice are considered difficult to understand, you can assist us and get paid!

Goal:

Our goal is to screen 1,000 people’s speech. If Project Euphonia’s research proves successful, it will enable phones, computers, and other devices to recognize unique speech patterns that can occur because of speech disorders. This can improve the quality of life for millions of people living with disordered speech.

“My husband and I were delighted to help the Google team improve this technology. Everyone we dealt with guided us step by step in the process of reading 300 short phrases. We completed the short phrases in about 90 minutes. We recommend that you consider participating in this project!”

If you’re interested in contributing to speech recognition research, you can now participate in the Speech Accessibility Project. This initiative, led by the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, is currently recruiting U.S. and Puerto Rican adults with various conditions, including Parkinson’s disease, Down syndrome, cerebral palsy, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), and those who have had a stroke. Participants can earn up to $180 for their contributions. To get involved, visit the Speech Accessibility App through the project’s website.
