LSVT Global Team Member Spotlight! Bernadette Kosir, OTR/L, CAPS

Bernadette Kosir, OTR/L, CAPS: Faculty for LSVT BIG at LSVT Global

What do you do?

In my role as LSVT BIG Faculty, I work with my team in training physical and occupational therapy clinicians in understanding and implementing the LSVT BIG treatment protocol with their patients.  This includes certification course training as well as ongoing clinical training through webinars and labs, both virtually and “live”.  I am most proud of the LSVT BIG and LSVT LOUD teams’ vibrancy and forward thinking, always seeking to assure best quality in training and promoting research.  As a Registered Occupational Therapist and clinical manager, I hope that I bring my unique experience and application of LSVT BIG to continue in growing and enhancing our team’s body of knowledge.

I am looking ahead to my upcoming role as Compliance Specialist for Ascension Health in the Metro Detroit area.  In my new role, I will have the opportunity to use my skills as a therapist, clinical director, and administrator in assuring clinical regulatory compliance in ambulatory care settings across 6 hospitals.  Ascension Health is strongly committed to its mission of caring for the underserved in the Detroit area, and I look forward to supporting this mission in any way possible.

How long have you been with LSVT Global?

I joined the original LSVT BIG Faculty team in 2011.

What is your favorite part of your job?

As clinical and support faculty, we share such a powerful protocol and effective clinical tool with our trainee therapists.  Truly there is absolutely nothing to compare to the feeling of joy and confidence that our newly-certified therapists are now empowered to change the lives of our patients with Parkinson’s Disease and neurological diseases, and their care partners.  As an LSVT BIG certified Occupational Therapist myself, I have seen the results and heard the gratitude from patients and families firsthand.  Our team of dedicated educators take great satisfaction in this “spread of effects” into so many corners of the world.

Tell us a little about yourself:

I am a fairly simple and direct person who has been blessed with wonderful career opportunities that went in all sorts of OT directions.  My heart remains with caring for patients in their homes with home health and hospice.  More recently, I had the opportunity to share my clinical visions and clinical programs such as LSVT BIG and LSVT LOUD as a home health clinical director, administrator, and consultant.

Over the past few years, I have been caregiver for my mother, Mary Kosir, who recently passed away.  We cared for her in her home of 60+ years, and through her I learned the joys of cultivating a garden, harvesting and preserving organic produce and creating beautiful landscapes season to season.  She also passed on her considerable culinary skills, and her compassion for animals and neighbors near and far.

I look forward to carrying on these simple joys and enjoying my extended family and wonderful friends here in beautiful Michigan and beyond!

Do ordinary things with extraordinary love”  – Mother Teresa of Calcutta

“Bernie was trained in LSVT BIG at the 4th course we ever held in Chicago, IL back in 2008. She was one of the first occupational therapists to be trained in LSVT BIG. Armed with her new LSVT BIG knowledge, she led a corporate-wide implementation of LSVT BIG at Residential Home Health, a home health agency in Michigan and Illinois. Her early work and passion for home health laid a foundation for successful LSVT BIG and LSVT LOUD delivery in home care settings. Bernie is an endless source of knowledge about home health operations, interdisciplinary teamwork, care of people with advanced Parkinson’s and/or cognitive changes and aging in place. She has been instrumental in our ability to guide countless other clinicians and facilities to successful LSVT LOUD and LSVT BIG implementation in home health settings. Bernie is caring, giving, kind, and a calm, steady force on our team. LSVT BIG would not be where it is today without her expertise as an OT, a home health provider, and a healthcare facility administrator. Thank you, Bernie, for all you have done and continue to do for LSVT BIG and LSVT LOUD!”
