LSVT Team Member Spotlight: Julia Hirschwald, LSVT LOUD Faculty

Julia Hirschwald, LSVT LOUD Faculty

Speech and Language Pathologist, M.Sc.

Short description of what you do:

I am a Speech and Language Pathologist from Germany, currently in the final year of my PhD at Trinity College Dublin, Ireland. As part of my PhD, I specialize in swallowing disorders (dysphagia) in people with Parkinson’s disease. In addition to my research, I am a lecturer at the Catholic University of Applied Sciences in Mainz, Germany. I also co-host the podcast dysphagia matters with a colleague and friend, where we interview experts to discuss all aspects of swallowing and swallowing disorders. Our mission is to bridge the gap between research and clinical practice, making up to date knowledge accessible to healthcare professionals.

How long have you been with LSVT Global?

I first became involved with LSVT Global in 2015 during my apprenticeship, when I had the opportunity to attend an LSVT LOUD workshop and get LSVT LOUD certified. The workshop’s translator, whose work greatly impressed and inspired me, mentioned that she would soon be leaving her role and that they were seeking a replacement. Seizing the opportunity, I spoke with her after the workshop, and not long after, I became one of two new translators for the German LSVT LOUD workshops. Since then, I’ve thoroughly enjoyed working with the LSVT Global team.

What is your favorite part of the job/what do you enjoy most?

My favorite part of the job is the opportunity to make a real impact on people’s lives by helping them improve their communication and swallowing abilities. I also love the variety that comes with my work—whether it’s teaching, conducting research, translating, or interviewing experts for our podcast. Every aspect challenges me to keep learning and growing, and I find it incredibly rewarding to see the direct application of research in clinical practice, especially when it enhances patient care.

Tell us a little about yourself!

I particularly enjoy road biking, running, and swimming. When I’m on vacation, I love to go camping, often choosing destinations that offer the best opportunities for one—or all—of these activities.

My favorite quote or favorite food or favorite past time:

My favorite past time was just last month in Sardinia, Italy. Sardina has beautiful beaches and crystal-clear water. I absolutely enjoyed swimming and snorkeling or just relaxing at the beach.
