LSVT Global Team Member Spotlight! Thomas J Gangemi, PT, DPT, CLT, MBA

Thomas J Gangemi, PT, DPT, CLT, MBA; LSVT BIG Faculty and Consultant

What do you do?

I teach the LSVT BIG protocol to physical and occupational therapy professionals and students. I also review online LSVT BIG exams and provide feedback to assist learners in successfully completing the exam. Over the years, I have provided consultation to LSVT Global related to administration considerations, insurance regulations and other topics, drawing from my experience working in many different capacities as a physical therapist.

How long have you been with LSVT Global?

I joined the teaching team in February 2011. Wow! Nine years! It seems like only yesterday.

What is your favorite part of your job?

As in instructor, I observe the metamorphosis of clinicians who go to the course with little or no knowledge of LSVT BIG and I witness first-hand the excitement and enthusiasm build over the two days. By the time they leave, they are so pumped and eager to use what they have learned. That is the greatest thrill for me. I know that from time to time, clinicians can fall into redundant behaviors and loose the zeal we all had as new clinicians. I see that zeal reborn in therapists and I am so glad to be part of that.

Tell us a little about yourself:

I have been a physical therapist since 1977. The profession has constantly evolved, and I have done so as well. Most of my career has been in outpatient private practice, which is where I am now, but with a twist. Our practice is a geriatric house calls practice. We see people in their homes where they experience their greatest and most frequent challenges. LSVT BIG is perfect in the home as I can teach patients how to move bigger, better and more safely in their real-life environment!

I have also had opportunities to work with large health care organizations in home health, skilled nursing and acute care.

For the past three years, I have served on the Board of Directors of Shake It Off, a not for profit organization which funds research in the benefits of exercise for people with PD.

I am married to my best friend, colleague and business partner, Deb, who is also an LSVT BIG certified physical therapist. We have been on a personal and professional journey together for 37 years. We share our lives with our two sons, Anthony and Aidyn, and two dogs. At this time, home is Wilmington, Delaware. Having lived up and down the east coast, from New England to Florida, we are now sort of in the middle with the hope to move one more time, back to the Sunshine State. I am an avid sailor. Deb and I have sailed in some magnificent locations, and we look forward to once again living where we can sail year-round!

Favorite quote, food, or pastime:

To me, food is more than just sustenance!

It is not feasible to identify one type of food as my favorite. I enjoy trying all foods, especially when they are prepared true to the origins of the cuisine. When we are in different cities teaching, I look for unique ethnic restaurants. Some have been amazing! A few favorites have been Ethiopian, Chilean, Middle Eastern, and all sorts of Asian. We are now close to Philadelphia where we enjoy searching for new eateries.  It is all part of the journey!

“Tom is the epitome of a team player. He is always ready to jump in and help whenever and wherever needed! It has been a joy to watch him evolve in his teaching skills as part of the LSVT BIG faculty. We also rely on his vast experience across many practice setting to help us answer questions and tailor our teaching to help LSVT BIG clinicians around the world. He has enriched all our lives as an LSVT BIG faculty and friend!”
